Divorce or separation is tough, no doubt about it. But when children are involved, the challenges can reach a whole new level. Co-parenting is the name of the game, and it’s a dance that requires finesse, patience, and a truckload of resilience.
So, if you find yourself in the midst of this chaotic waltz, fear not! I’m here to offer some sage advice on how to start co-parenting after a separation like an absolute pro.
Accept that You’re Stuck Together
Let’s face it, you and your ex might not be the best of buddies right now. But guess what? You’re forever bound by those precious little humans you brought into this world. So, put on your grown-up pants and accept the reality that co-parenting is your new mission in life. Embrace it like a superhero embracing their superpower (but maybe minus the costume).
Communicate, Communicate, Communicate
Here’s a secret: your kids and your former significant other aren’t telepathic. Shocking, I know! So, it’s time to develop those rusty communication skills. Be direct, be honest, and for the love of all things sane, keep the sarcasm in check (at least during serious conversations).
Whether it’s a shared Google calendar, email chains, or carrier pigeons, find a method that works for both of you and stick to it.
Leave the Past in the Dust
Sure, your ex might have done you dirty and left you with more emotional baggage than you can even begin to unpack, but dwelling on the past won’t do you any favors. Co-parenting is about focusing on the future, and on the well-being of your children. So, resist the urge to bring up ancient history during every interaction. Trust me, it’s not worth the headache.
Embrace Flexibility (No, Really!)
Life is a wild roller coaster, and sometimes it feels like it’s on steroids. As a co-parent, you need to learn the art of flexibility. Plans change, emergencies happen, and the universe likes to throw curveballs when you least expect them. So, be willing to adapt and be open to compromise. Your kids will appreciate it, and you’ll save yourself from unnecessary stress-induced wrinkles.
Keep It Civil (Even When It’s Hard)
Let’s be honest, there will be moments when you want to unleash your inner dragon and smash everything in sight. But take a deep breath and remember that your children are watching and listening.
Aim for civility in your interactions with your ex, even when it feels like a Herculean task. You’re teaching your kids valuable lessons about conflict resolution, empathy, and maturity. Plus, it’s an excellent opportunity to show off your advanced acting skills.
Seek Professional Help When Needed
Sometimes, no matter how hard you try, the co-parenting dance turns into an episode of “So You Think You Can Dance” gone wrong. In those moments, don’t hesitate to seek professional help. Mediators, therapists, and support groups are there for a reason. They can provide guidance, support, and a much-needed reality check when emotions run high.
And lucky you….I am a mediator specializing in high conflict custody and divorce issues. Feel free to reach out and schedule a consult!
Co-parenting is a roller coaster and can be exhausting and emotionally draining. Remember, your children are watching and at the end of the day, the focus should always be on what is best for the child/ren.
